Bigger Isn’t Always Better

By Allison Medoff

Don’t blame the lagging economy for the slump in private aviation, thank the corporate bigwigs and the buzzing media. Commercial airlines are giving private aircrafts a bad rep and business is feeling the burn. The public views private jets as extravagant toys, enjoyed for no other purpose but to fly in luxury while receiving full body massages and sipping on unlimited cocktails. Wrong.

Instead picture this. Small business aircrafts transporting the financial advisors, marketing experts, and salesmen who follow strict time schedules. They attend multiple meetings in several cities over the course of a day. Commercial airlines only service 500 airports, where as private charters can land at upwards of 5,000 different bases. The extra money saved on lengthy ground transportation and the avoidance of lines, chaos, and confusion allows that many more deals to be sealed which is money in the pocket.

Private aviation starting to make sense? Let’s not forget about the 1.2 million people employed by the industry. What will happen to those people and their families? Should they suffer because the select few have the money to spend on a frivolous jet ride?  Savannah based Gulfstream has over 6,000 employees but is forced to lay off 1,200 workers because of a steep decline in sales.  Another 1,500 employees will be granted a leave of absence. This isn’t just a sign of the times but largely due to a misconception of the industry.

Don’t lose hope yet. Known for its quality and service the private aviation business is resilient and is sure to bounce back stronger than ever.
