Get Out of This World With Virgin Galactic

By Natasha Dorsainvil

space

A trip to the southern New Mexican desert with $200,000 in pocket change in a year or two will get you much more than a lifetime’s worth of burritos and enchiladas. Last Thursday, Virgin Group offshoot Virgin Galactic broke ground on what will become the world’s first spaceport. Aptly located and futuristic in its design, Spaceport America is the UFO looking baby of London designers Foster + Partners. The earth friendly facility will be covered with solar energy hoarding tiles that could save between 50 to 70 percent in energy costs. The launch pad will spread across 110,000 sq ft. and house Virgin’s fleet of WhiteKnightTwo motherships.  Docked aboard the mothership will be a six-seat SpaceShipTwo that will soar passengers up to 48,000 feet before jettisoning into space for a four-minute itinerary that includes floating and spectacular views of home. The spaceport is slated to be complete by December 2010 or spring of 2011. Space tourists to-be have already made payments to star in their very own space trek experience.
