Palace in the Sky
By Allison Medoff

Good things come to those who wait. Queen Elizabeth II will finally be the proud owner of her very first private jet. One would think someone of her stature and power could have any wish granted with the snap of a finger. Quite the contrary. The prospective, hand-me-down, £3 million BAe jet will not be approved for the Queen of England until Sir Alan Reid, the Keeper of the Privy Purse and other senior officials at Buckingham Palace that the purchase is financially viable. A final decision will be made in March 2010.
Royal Family travel costs exceeded £6 million in 2008 according to The Daily Mail. This new purchase should save much needed money in the long run. No longer will excess money be spent because the elderly RAF planes broke down or were unavailable. And Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his cabinet will just have to make due with the current RAF charters, for the queen’s new toy will be strictly for Royal Family use only. In the meantime, Her Majesty has taken a new Sikorsky helicopter under her wing until the private jet is approved next spring.
