    • —The terminal houses the Mitchell Gallery of Flight, a nonprofit museum. Furthermore, there is a branch of Renaissance Books at the terminal, considered the world's first used book store in an airport.

Unfortunately, the American mural was covered up during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
    • —Since March 1941, the airport's weather station has been used as the official point for Milwaukee weather observations and records by the National Weather Service.
    • —MKE is host to the General Mitchell Air National Guard Base, home to the 128th Air Refueling Wing, an Air Mobility Command gained unit of the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
    History

    A Legacy of Private Aviation

MKE originated in 1920 as Hamilton Airport, established by local businessman and aviator Thomas F. Hamilton. On October 19th, 1926, the airport was purchased by Milwaukee County, and it was promptly renamed Milwaukee County Airport. In June 1927, the first terminal opened, named the Hirschbuehl Farmhouse. Northwest Airlines began to service the airport that month, while Kohler Aviation Corporation started to provide passenger service across Lake Michigan on August 31st, 1929. The Works Progress Administration constructed a new two-story terminal building between 1938 and July 1940. On March 17th, 1941, the airport was renamed General Mitchell Field after Milwaukee native Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, who is often regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force. On July 20th, 1955, the present-day terminal opened, and it was renovated and expanded in 1985, with larger shops and a more extensive ticketing and baggage claim area. Furthermore, in 1990 the "hammerhead" section of Concourse D was added, with 16 additional gates. In 1985, the airport was renamed the General Mitchell International Airport. The airport was once a hub for AirTran Airways, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Airlines, and North Central Airlines. The runway safety area at MKE was expanded following an accident on January 21st, 2007, when a Northwest Airlines flight skidded off the runway following an aborted takeoff. As such, the construction of the safety areas began in 2009 and was completed in 2012. Eight more gates were added to Concourse C in 2007. Furthermore, all airlines housed in Concourse E began moving to Concourse C in April 2017, allowing for Concourse E's remodeling. This move would also allow for moving the processing of international arrival into the terminal (which would allow for the closure of the International Arrivals Building). In February 2019, the airport was renamed Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, which was meant to highlight the airport's location.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about flying private to Milwaukee.

Yes, private jet flights offer flexible departure times. Operators generally provide a window of 30 minutes to two hours, but this can be extended upon request, provided it doesn't conflict with crew duty limitations or subsequent flight schedules. It's best to confirm this flexibility with your aviation advisor when booking.

Generally, each passenger on a light or midsize private jet can bring one piece of luggage, with each piece weighing up to 23 kilograms (about 50 lbs). However, larger jets, which are often used for longer journeys, typically allow passengers to bring more than one piece of luggage per person to accommodate extended stays.

Yes, all passengers on international private jet flights must go through customs. Certain countries require customs clearance at designated ports of entry. For instance, flights heading to Bora Bora must stop in Tahiti for customs. Similarly, when entering the U.S. from Mexico, passengers must clear customs at the first port of entry.

Crew members must have a minimum of 10 hours of rest within a 24-hour period. Their duty day cannot exceed 14 hours, followed by a rest period at their hotel. Typically, flight operators schedule around 12 hours of rest to accommodate travel time to and from the hotel, ensuring the crew has adequate rest.

A fuel stop usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes. To expedite the process, the flight operator or pilots often notify the fueling service in advance, so a fuel truck is ready upon the jet's arrival. For smaller aircraft, refueling might take as little as 30 minutes.

Yes, on most private jets, luggage can be accessed during the flight because the luggage and passenger areas are on the same level. This contrasts with commercial flights where luggage is stored separately in the cargo hold. On larger private jets, luggage is often stored in an area behind the lavatory, making it accessible during the flight.

Private jet passengers can enjoy a variety of catering options, including local cuisine. While standard snacks and beverages are typically available, meals that do not require cooking can be ordered in advance. Any hot food must be pre-cooked and can only be warmed on board.

Yes, pets are welcome on most private jet flights. It's important to inform the operator in advance, as there may be specific requirements or a small cleaning fee. Ensure that all necessary documentation and vaccination records for your pet are current. For domestic U.S. travel, dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old and weaned.
