Winter is Hawaii’s big private jet season. It brings the Thanksgiving and year-end holidays, the humpback whales and the January golf weeks, and most trips come from the West Coast. It is also one of the longest overwater flights most travelers will take on a private jet: Hawaii is about 2,000 to 2,300 nm from California, with no airports in between. This guide covers which jets can make it, which island airport to use, Hawaii’s arrival and departure agriculture rules, pets and the 2026–27 winter calendar.
Haute Jets is a private jet charter broker, not an operator. We arrange flights with Wyvern- and ARGUS-rated FAA Part 135 operators, with access to 3,500+ vetted aircraft. No jet cards, no membership fees. Most quotes arrive within 60 minutes.

One change for golf travelers: the PGA Tour confirmed in April 2026 that it is ending its tournament in Maui, the event held at The Plantation Course at Kapalua from 1999 to 2025. In 2027, Hawaii’s January golf is on PGA Tour Champions, at Waiʻalae on Oahu and Hualalai on Hawaii Island.
Which island, which airport
| Island | Airport (FAA / ICAO) | Closest to |
|---|---|---|
| Oahu | Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL / PHNL) | Honolulu, Waikiki, Kahala and Waiʻalae Country Club |
| Maui | Kahului Airport (OGG / PHOG) | Wailea, Kaanapali, Kapalua and the road to Hana |
| Hawaii Island (west) | Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA / PHKO) | Kona, the Kohala Coast resorts and Hualalai |
| Hawaii Island (east) | Hilo International Airport (ITO / PHTO) | Hilo and the island’s east side |
| Kauai | Lihue Airport (LIH / PHLI) | Lihue, Poipu and the drive to Princeville |
The state also runs smaller airports, including Lanai (LNY), Molokai (MKK) and Kapalua (JHM) on Maui. Whether a jet can use one depends on the runway, the aircraft and the operator’s rules, so we check before quoting. For airport details, see our pages for Kahului (OGG) and Kona (KOA), and our Honolulu private jet charter page.
Can your jet fly to Hawaii nonstop?
This is the first question for any Hawaii trip. Here are great-circle distances from common mainland airports:
| From | Honolulu (HNL) | Kahului, Maui (OGG) | Kona (KOA) | Lihue, Kauai (LIH) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco (SFO) | 2,083 nm | 2,031 nm | 2,056 nm | 2,124 nm |
| San Jose (SJC) | 2,098 nm | 2,045 nm | 2,070 nm | 2,141 nm |
| Van Nuys (VNY) | 2,217 nm | 2,157 nm | 2,173 nm | 2,268 nm |
| Orange County (SNA) | 2,242 nm | 2,181 nm | 2,196 nm | 2,294 nm |
| San Diego (SAN) | 2,268 nm | 2,205 nm | 2,218 nm | 2,322 nm |
| Seattle Boeing Field (BFI) | 2,329 nm | 2,297 nm | 2,339 nm | 2,349 nm |
| Las Vegas (LAS) | 2,398 nm | 2,340 nm | 2,359 nm | 2,445 nm |
| Scottsdale (SDL) | 2,538 nm | 2,475 nm | 2,489 nm | 2,590 nm |
| Teterboro (TEB) | 4,308 nm | 4,257 nm | 4,282 nm | 4,346 nm |
Distances calculated from OurAirports coordinates. Actual flight distance is longer once routing and winds are included.
Published range is measured under set conditions. For a Hawaii trip, the operator also has to plan for winds over the Pacific, the fuel reserves it requires and an alternate airport in the islands. A jet whose published range is only slightly more than the distance usually will not work. Here is how some jets we have reviewed compare, using manufacturer figures:
- HondaJet Elite II: 1,547 nm published range. Not a Hawaii nonstop. See HondaJet vs Cirrus Vision Jet.
- Embraer Phenom 300E: 2,010 nm (five occupants, NBAA IFR). That is less than every distance in the table above. See our Phenom 300E review.
- Bombardier Challenger 350: 3,200 nm with eight passengers. A super-midsize jet that operators can plan for West Coast to Hawaii, subject to winds and payload. See our Challenger 350 review.
- Embraer Praetor 600: 4,018 nm with four passengers. See our Praetor 600 review.
From the East Coast, Hawaii is more than 4,200 nm away. That calls for a long-range jet the operator confirms for the leg, or a planned fuel stop on the West Coast. See ultra-long-range jets.
A Hawaii flight is also an extended overwater operation. For Part 135 charter, FAA rule 14 CFR 135.167 requires a life preserver with a locator light for each occupant, and enough approved life rafts with survival equipment for everyone on board, unless the FAA has approved a deviation. We confirm that the aircraft quoted is equipped and approved for the leg.
Arriving in Hawaii: the agriculture declaration
Hawaii law requires every passenger, officer and crew member arriving from the continental U.S. to complete the State of Hawaii plants and animals declaration, even if they are bringing nothing to declare. One adult can complete it for family members. This applies to private aircraft as well as airlines; the form can be paper or electronic, and the operator handles getting it to the inspector at the first airport of arrival.
Declare any plants, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, seeds, soil or animals. Pack these separately so inspection is quick.
Leaving Hawaii: USDA inspection before departure
Federal rules also apply on the way home. Under 7 CFR 318.13-9, no aircraft may leave Hawaii for the mainland until a USDA inspector has had the chance to inspect it and has said it may depart. Under 7 CFR 318.13-10, passengers must offer their checked and carry-on bags for agricultural inspection. In a 2025 audit, the USDA Inspector General reported that for private aircraft, inspectors usually meet passengers near the aircraft and inspect bags by hand before they are loaded. Allow time for it, and do not pack fruit, flowers or plants you have not shown to the inspector.
Flying to Hawaii with a dog or cat
Hawaii is strict about dogs and cats. Under the state’s arrival-port rule (Hawaii Administrative Rules §4-29-5), dogs, cats and other carnivores must land on Oahu or at a neighbor-island airport that the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity has approved. An animal that arrives at an unapproved airport must be shipped to Oahu at the owner’s expense on the first available flight. Start with the department’s animal quarantine requirements well before you travel, and tell us about pets when you ask for a quote so the operator plans the right arrival airport.
Island hopping by private jet
Once you are in the islands, the hops are short. Great-circle distances are about 87 nm from Honolulu to Kahului, 88 nm from Honolulu to Lihue, 142 nm from Honolulu to Kona and 73 nm from Kahului to Kona. Light jets and turboprops suit these short legs. If you want to split a trip between two islands, ask us whether a smaller aircraft is available in the islands for the inter-island leg.
Whale season
NOAA describes the Hawaiian Islands as the main winter breeding grounds for North Pacific humpback whales. About half of the population visits each winter and spring. Whales are generally seen from November through April, with the peak from January through March. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary covers shallow waters around the main islands, including the Maui Nui area of Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe. Maui Nui is part of the sanctuary, so Kahului (OGG) puts you close to those waters.
Planning checklist
- Holiday trips: request quotes early; Thanksgiving week and the Christmas–New Year’s period are the busiest.
- Passengers and bags: give an exact count. Payload affects whether a jet can fly the ocean crossing nonstop.
- Pick the island first: fly straight to OGG, KOA or LIH instead of connecting through Honolulu.
- Pets: start the Hawaii paperwork well ahead and tell us early.
- Return day: leave time for the USDA agricultural inspection before departure.

FAQs
How far is Hawaii from California by private jet?
Great-circle distances are about 2,031 nm from San Francisco to Kahului, Maui, and about 2,217 nm from Van Nuys to Honolulu. The flight is longer once routing and winds are included, so the operator plans each leg with reserves and an alternate.
Can a light jet fly to Hawaii?
Usually not nonstop. The HondaJet Elite II publishes 1,547 nm and the Phenom 300E publishes 2,010 nm with five occupants. Both are less than the 2,000 to 2,300 nm from California. Hawaii trips usually need a super-midsize or larger jet that the operator confirms for the leg.
Which airport should I use for Maui?
Kahului Airport (OGG) is Maui’s main airport and is about 2,031 nm from San Francisco and 2,157 nm from Van Nuys. Flying straight there avoids connecting through Honolulu.
Do private jet passengers fill out the Hawaii agriculture form?
Yes. Hawaii law requires every passenger, officer and crew member arriving from the continental U.S. to complete the plants and animals declaration, even with nothing to declare. One adult can complete it for family members.
Can I bring my dog on a private jet to Hawaii?
Yes, if you meet Hawaii’s animal quarantine rules. Dogs and cats must land on Oahu or at a neighbor-island airport approved by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity. Start the paperwork well ahead and tell us about pets when you request a quote.
When is whale season in Hawaii?
NOAA says humpback whales are generally seen in Hawaii from November through April, with the peak from January through March.
How do I get a quote for a private jet to Hawaii?
Request a quote at https://www.hautejets.com/request-a-quote or call (800) 257-5661. Most quotes arrive within 60 minutes. No jet cards, no membership fees.
