A Legacy of Private Aviation
The airport originated in 1928, and it was founded by the Mayo Foundation in order to bring patients into the May Clinic. Occupying 285 acres, the airport was to be run by the Rochester Airport Company, a subsidiary of the Mayo Foundation. Northwest Airlines was the first to service the airport with flights from St. Paul. The airport expanded to 370 acres in 1940, and the runways were paved during that time. The Army Air Corps used the airport for training operations during WWII. Following the war, the airport was given to the city of Rochester, although it continued to operate as Rochester Airport Company under an agreement with the city. In 1952, the airport was renamed Lobb Field. Unfortunately, by 1960 it became clear that the airport could not expand for the sake of larger aircraft, and it was too close to the city. As such, it was determined that the airport should close, and a new airport was to be built southwest of the city. The original Rochester Airport closed in 1961. Rochester Municipal Airport opened at its current location in 1960, with service from Northwest Airlines and Braniff International Airways (Ozark joined a year later when Lobb closed). In 1965, Runway 13 was listed at 6,400 feet, while Runway 2 was listed at 4,000 feet. That same year the first jets arrived in the form of Northwest 727s. 1968 saw the coming of North Central Airlines, while Braniff left. American Airlines began to service Rochester in 1988, and in 1995 the airport added a United States Customs Service post, which became Rochester International Airport. In early 2001, TWA began flights to St. Louis, but these were short-lived, as they soon merged with American. On September 15th, 2005, Runway 13 was reopened, having been lengthened to 9,034 feet with the addition of a runway centerline and touchdown zone lighting. These changes were made to allow wide-body aircraft (weight-restricted upon departure).

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about flying private to Rochester.
Yes, private jet flights offer flexible departure times. Operators generally provide a window of 30 minutes to two hours, but this can be extended upon request, provided it doesn't conflict with crew duty limitations or subsequent flight schedules. It's best to confirm this flexibility with your aviation advisor when booking.
Generally, each passenger on a light or midsize private jet can bring one piece of luggage, with each piece weighing up to 23 kilograms (about 50 lbs). However, larger jets, which are often used for longer journeys, typically allow passengers to bring more than one piece of luggage per person to accommodate extended stays.
Yes, all passengers on international private jet flights must go through customs. Certain countries require customs clearance at designated ports of entry. For instance, flights heading to Bora Bora must stop in Tahiti for customs. Similarly, when entering the U.S. from Mexico, passengers must clear customs at the first port of entry.
Crew members must have a minimum of 10 hours of rest within a 24-hour period. Their duty day cannot exceed 14 hours, followed by a rest period at their hotel. Typically, flight operators schedule around 12 hours of rest to accommodate travel time to and from the hotel, ensuring the crew has adequate rest.
A fuel stop usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes. To expedite the process, the flight operator or pilots often notify the fueling service in advance, so a fuel truck is ready upon the jet's arrival. For smaller aircraft, refueling might take as little as 30 minutes.
Yes, on most private jets, luggage can be accessed during the flight because the luggage and passenger areas are on the same level. This contrasts with commercial flights where luggage is stored separately in the cargo hold. On larger private jets, luggage is often stored in an area behind the lavatory, making it accessible during the flight.
Private jet passengers can enjoy a variety of catering options, including local cuisine. While standard snacks and beverages are typically available, meals that do not require cooking can be ordered in advance. Any hot food must be pre-cooked and can only be warmed on board.
Yes, pets are welcome on most private jet flights. It's important to inform the operator in advance, as there may be specific requirements or a small cleaning fee. Ensure that all necessary documentation and vaccination records for your pet are current. For domestic U.S. travel, dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old and weaned.
