Charleston Executive Airport, or JZI, is an airport in Charleston County, South Carolina. Owned by the Charleston County Aviation Authority, JZI serves the general aviation community, offering no scheduled airline service. A Legacy of Private Aviation
JZI originated in April 1943 as Johns Island Army Airfield. It was built as an unmanned emergency landing airfield, an auxiliary base to Columbia Army Air Base. On March 31st, 1944, Charleston was reassigned to Air Transport Command, which meant that it was renamed Charleston Army Airfield. Once again, it served as an emergency landing base for transatlantic flights with no permanent structures. Finally, on August 25th, 1945, the airfield was turned over to the local authorities. As such, they turned it into a civilian airport, although military aircraft still use it occasionally.
