New York to Europe is the classic heavy jet trip. London is about 3,000 nautical miles from Teterboro, and Paris, Geneva, Nice and Rome are all within 3,750. That puts every major Western European city within nonstop reach of a modern heavy jet. The real question is which aircraft fits your group, your destination and the flight home. This review compares the heavy jets most often quoted for New York to Europe using the manufacturers' own published figures.
Haute Jets is a private jet charter broker, not an operator. We arrange flights with Wyvern- and ARGUS-rated FAA Part 135 operators, with access to 3,500+ vetted aircraft. No jet cards and no membership fees. Most quotes arrive within 60 minutes.

The heavy jets, one by one
Bombardier Challenger 650: the efficient choice for London and Paris
The Challenger 650 is the smallest aircraft here and the one we suggest most often for two to six people going to London or Paris. Bombardier lists 4,000 nm of range with six passengers and says the aircraft links New York and London. The cabin is 25 ft 7 in long and 7 ft 11 in wide, with 115 cubic feet of baggage space, and Bombardier says it can use London City's steep approach. It is slower than the newer jets, with a top speed of Mach 0.85, and Athens and Istanbul are beyond its published range. For a larger party, or when you want more margin on the way home, look at the jets below.
Gulfstream G500: a fast large cabin for groups
Gulfstream lists the G500 at 5,300 nm at Mach 0.85 with eight passengers, or 4,500 nm at Mach 0.90. That covers every Western European city in the table above at high cruise speed. The cabin has up to three living areas and seats up to 19, with sleeping for up to eight depending on the layout. Gulfstream quotes a cabin altitude of 3,255 ft at 41,000 ft, which helps on an overnight crossing. The G500 suits a group that wants speed and space for London, Paris or Geneva.
Dassault Falcon 6X: the widest cabin in this group
The Falcon 6X has the widest and tallest cabin here: 102 inches wide and 78 inches high, according to Dassault. Range is 5,500 nm with eight passengers. Dassault also highlights 30 windows plus a skylight and access to steep-approach airports such as London City and Lugano. It is a strong choice for families or business groups who value room to move around on an overnight crossing.
Bombardier Global 5500: the Global 6500's cabin width in a shorter cabin
The Global 5500 shares the Global 6500's 7 ft 11 in by 6 ft 2 in cross-section, with a cabin 40 ft 9 in long. Bombardier lists 5,900 nm with eight passengers and a top speed of Mach 0.90. That is enough range for Athens or Istanbul from New York on paper, and plenty of margin for London, Paris or the Riviera.
Dassault Falcon 8X: three engines and the quietest cabin claim
The Falcon 8X is a trijet with 6,450 nm of range and a 42.7 ft cabin. Dassault says it has the quietest cabin in the industry and up to 32 windows, with layouts that can include an aft shower or lie-flat crew quarters. It can also use short and steep-approach runways: Dassault says it can fly nonstop to Chicago from London City's 3,934 ft runway. For a long weekend in Nice or Geneva with a full cabin, the 8X has range to spare in both directions.
Gulfstream G600 and Bombardier Global 6500: the most margin
Both list 6,600 nm with eight passengers. The G600 offers up to four living areas, seats up to 19 and sleeps up to 10; Gulfstream lists 5,600 nm at Mach 0.90. The Global 6500 seats up to 17, has a 43 ft 3 in cabin and adds a separate crew rest area and a forward lavatory. Choose one of these when you are carrying a full cabin, going as far as Athens or Istanbul, or want the most room for winter headwinds on the flight home. For our head-to-head on the two makers, see Gulfstream vs Bombardier.
Which heavy jet for which trip
- London or Paris, up to six passengers: Challenger 650. See our New York to London guide and New York to Paris route.
- London or Paris, seven or more passengers: Gulfstream G500, Falcon 6X or Global 5500.
- Geneva, Nice, Milan or Munich: G500, Falcon 6X or Global 5500, with the G600, Falcon 8X or Global 6500 when the cabin is full. See our Geneva and Nice pages.
- Rome, Athens or Istanbul: G600, Global 6500 or Falcon 8X for the most margin.
- Overnight with beds for everyone: ask for a G600 or Global 6500 layout with enough berthable seats, and confirm the configuration on your quote.
What a range figure does not tell you
Published ranges are theoretical figures under set conditions: a stated passenger load, NBAA IFR fuel reserves and a set cruise speed. Gulfstream notes that actual range is affected by air traffic control routing, operating speed, weather, cabin outfitting and other factors. Three things matter most on the Atlantic:
- Westbound winds. The flight home usually runs into the jet stream, especially in winter. A jet that reaches Rome comfortably may need more planning for the return.
- Payload. More passengers and bags mean less fuel. Tell us your real head count and luggage when you request a quote.
- Airports. Short or steep-approach runways, such as London City, limit takeoff weight. The operator plans fuel around the runway as well as the distance.
Before every quote, the operator checks the specific aircraft against your route, date and load. If a fuel stop is needed, you will know before you book.
Older heavy jets you may see on a quote
Charter fleets also include earlier heavy jets such as the Gulfstream G450 and G550, the Bombardier Global 6000, and the Dassault Falcon 7X and Falcon 900 family. Many fly New York to Europe regularly. Your quote shows the exact model and year of manufacture, so you can compare like for like. New York departure airports
Most transatlantic charters leave from Teterboro (TEB) in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, or Westchester County (HPN) in White Plains. FAQs
What is the best heavy jet for a New York to London flight?
For up to six passengers, the Bombardier Challenger 650 is the efficient choice: Bombardier says it links New York and London, with 4,000 nm of range with six passengers. For more people, more space or more margin, a Gulfstream G500 or G600, Bombardier Global 5500 or 6500, or Dassault Falcon 6X or 8X all have 5,300 nm or more of published range. London is about 3,000 nm from Teterboro.
How far is New York from London by private jet?
The great-circle distance from Teterboro (TEB) to London Luton (LTN) or Farnborough (FAB) is about 2,990 nm, and to London City (LCY) about 3,010 nm. The actual flight-planned distance is longer because aircraft follow oceanic tracks and air traffic control routings.
Can a heavy jet fly nonstop from New York to Rome or Athens?
Rome Ciampino is about 3,730 nm from Teterboro and Athens about 4,290 nm. Both are inside the published range of the G500, G600, Global 5500, Global 6500, Falcon 6X and Falcon 8X. Athens is beyond the Challenger 650's published 4,000 nm. The operator confirms each flight against that day's winds and payload.
Why is the flight home from Europe harder than the flight out?
Westbound flights usually fly into the jet stream, so headwinds reduce how far a jet can go on a tank of fuel. Gulfstream notes that actual range is affected by routing, speed, weather and other factors. A jet with range to spare on the outbound leg is the safer choice for the return.
Is a heavy jet the same as an ultra-long-range jet?
Not quite. Charter brokers usually group the Challenger 650, Gulfstream G500 and Falcon 6X as heavy or large-cabin jets. Aircraft such as the Gulfstream G700 and Bombardier Global 7500 have more range and bigger cabins and sit in the ultra-long-range category. You do not need one to cross the Atlantic from New York.
